Ruth was a Gentile from Moab and chose to travel with her Jewish mother-in-law Naomi after both of their husband’s died. After the death of her husband and sons Naomi changed her name to Mara, meaning “bitter”; because of all the misfortune she had been dealt. Ruth chose to follow Naomi back to Bethlehem, but more importantly, she committed to follow the God of Israel. This is a beautiful picture of a respectful and Godly relationship with an in-law. Once back in Bethlehem, one of Naomi’s relative’s, Boaz, married Ruth after the Jewish custom. They became the grandparents of King David, the line of the promised Messiah.
